Mental Floss is a rare strain that I stumbled across while on a short vacation in scenic Victoria British Columbia. Before legalization Victoria had probably the best medical dispensaries in all of Canada. Due to their island-life mentality and large aging senior population, Vancouver Island as a whole is possibly more open to cannabis than anywhere else in the country. Therefore, with respect to weed, I packed light, in hopeful anticipation of collecting some really nice stuff during the trip.
The journey that we took over to the island was spontaneously executed in celebration of the birthday of one of my newest, but dearest gal pals. Just the two of us took off across the water, with not much planned but to party it up and have a good time. We spent the warm daylight searching for good food and good weed, and didn’t come out disappointed on either front.
The first dispensary we stopped in at was Leaf compassion, since I already carried a membership, we knew it would be an easy first stop in our cannabis tour. We came in at a busy time and there wasn’t too much selection available, so I pretty much just selected this strain based on the fact that it was sitting on the top-shelf and had a clever name. This strain was brand new to the dispensary; all that the budtender could tell me was that it was high quality and sativa dominant. So, I purchased a pricey $45 eighth, all based on the titillating title, Mental Floss. She seemed like my kind of girl from first glance, and I couldn’t wait to take her around the block and find out more about what she had to offer.
The first time that we enjoyed this strain we were using it as a wake and bake, after not waking up until almost noon. We were already pretty tired from a late night the day before, and we were trying to get energized and make it out in time to catch some famous Victoria brunch. This strain really did the trick, and fast, and after just a few hits we were entirely awake and extremely chatty. Definitely flying high, feeling very euphoric, with plastic grins stretched on our faces, we headed out of the house to fill our bellies. Rounding the corner out of the door, we were all of sudden startled by a massive female deer blocking our pathway out. It was majestic and terrifying at the same time, and for a second, I thought we may have been smoking something a little too strong for the morning, because it seemed almost surreal.
Most sources agree that Mental Floss is the genetic child of Blueberry, but the strain in general seems shrouded in mystery. I was directed to this strain when asking for a purely sativa flower, although online sources describe it as a 50/50 hybrid. During my first experience I would have called it a more sativa-dominant hybrid, it felt much more cerebral, with only a slight body numbness. After some time, the high does seem to mellow into one that is calmer and more relaxing, although the feelings of alertness never seem to dissipate.
I am taking some much needed me-time for tonight, and finally enjoying some Mental Floss on my own, as a chill-out strain. It really does not take her long to get your thoughts moving extremely fast; she’s easy to smoke, but very potent, and you can feel the effects come on right away. I was alert and stimulated enough to finish off the rest of my chores, while simultaneously warming up some food. After turning on a show and eating almost an entire pizza, I was finally feeling some of the heavy sedation that was also promised by this strain. But, remarkably enough, even 2 hours into my high, I’m still feeling cerebrally stimulated and energetic enough to squeeze in the rest of this review.
Every time I have smoked this strain, I have been averse to the comedown, always wanting to indulge in more before the tiredness starts to take effect. Even now, I am tempted to fill up my vaporizer to maintain the high, although I am pushing myself to experience the comedown for the sake of the review. This strain does not have the most enjoyable comedown, it creates that restless feeling where your body is sedated, but your mind still has yet to slow down. Mental Floss is not a strain that will allow me to peacefully go to sleep, and I will definitely need to cap the night with something very indica-dominant, if I want this strain to finally stop flossing out my brain.
Mental Floss is probably best summarized as just simply mind-blowing. It stimulates your thoughts, flushes out the bad ones, and then has you happy, chilling, and enjoying everything. It is high energy, and has you perceptibly buzzing, so it is probably used best as a social smoke, for an alone time mental cleansing, or for completing tasks that require either energy or focus. Not an easy girl to find, but for any experienced sativa users, she will surely be captivating and unforgettable.
