Yee-haw! I am saddled up and ready for a ride with the rare and mysterious Kentucky Durban. Sampling a lesser known strain is always thrilling, since you have fewer preconceived notions about what the experience will be like. The scant sources online seem to profile this strain as Durban Poison’s sinister cousin. Just by the description, she sounded to me like the kind of girl who might seduce you, fuck you with your arms tied to the bedpost, but then disappear right after, leaving you there chained, naked, stunned, but ultimately satisfied. So, I lit her up in a safe space, close to home, and with my phone within arm’s reach, in case I needed saving from some unforeseen predicaments.
Kentucky Durban tastes herbal, floral, sweet, earthy, and piney and it is smooth and incredibly easy to smoke. While puffing I was reminded of Power Plant, in the sense that I could keep on smoking and smoking, and not lose any sense of clear headedness. I walked back indoors with a smile on my face, happy, uplifted, and energetic, but mostly, I just became very immersed in my own thoughts. A lot of sativa-dominant strains will have my mind racing with all of these incredible, insightful, and novel ideas and have me very motivated and inspired. This is not the case with this particular strain. It is much more like you want to make the perfect cup of tea and then stare out of a window just thinking random thoughts. My thoughts are not foggy at all, but I am not feeling particularly responsive to my environment, instead I am engaged more in my own headspace. Even currently, writing seems too much like engaging with the outer world, and I will need a break just to stare out and zone back into my own private thoughts. Needless to say, I would not venture out into the public with this strain, at the risk of looking like a spacey lunatic. This is one of those strains where if you were in the company of someone, it might feel like you’ve had a whole entire conversation, but no one has actually spoken a word in about 20 minutes. Despite the strain’s rumored astounding THC content, I did not feel any sense of paranoia at all. I perhaps simply just felt a sense of restlessness from having an affluence of energy and not enough motivation to spend it all. With the passage of time, the high starts to mellow out a bit, and with a lower dosage you will feel completely back to normal in about 2 hours, with barely any tiredness or other after-effects. A higher dose will probably make you want to grab a snack, and either zone out to some light-hearted television, or take a nap to recover from your long mental journey.
Overall, this strain was not really anything like I had expected, and I’m not sure if the high really suited my needs completely. I was anticipating something very energizing and motivating, like the classic favourite, Durban Poison, although I did not receive any of those effects. The ride is totally mental, with only the slightest body tingles concentrated more in the face and chest. The intense cerebral nature and powerful psychoactive effects make this strain unsuitable for novice users, and could most likely induce an undesirable trip if you are not careful. I would say this strain is probably best when used for somewhat idle, yet mentally stimulating activities, for example: sustaining focus while gaming, or maybe getting immersed into a complex yet engaging movie plot. In my experience, Kentucky Durban was more like the girl who dresses in thigh-high leather boots, but, when you finally take her home, all she wants to do is show you how to bake the perfect cake while getting to know more about who you are as a person. After an interesting night, she will eventually fall asleep on your couch cuddling your cat, leaving you stunned, but possibly unsatisfied.
